FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: acetic acid is prepared by reacting methanol or derivative thereof with carbon monoxide in liquid reaction medium containing iridium catalyst, methyl iodide, water in amount of 0.1-15 wt % and methyl acetate. Promoter is at least one ruthenium osmium- containing compound. Promoter-to-iridium molar ratio varies from 0.1:1 to 15:1. Catalyst system comprises iridium catalyst, methyl iodide and one ruthenium- or osmium-containing compound. EFFECT: increased yield of the final product. 11 cl, 7 tbl
