FIELD: cellular communication systems. SUBSTANCE: set of digital sequences carrying digital signals is transmitted over radio channels wherein signals may be distorted due to attenuation, time dispersion, and interference. Distorted signals are applied to receiver provided with one or more antennas. Signals received are processed to form streams of received-signal samples for each antenna. Combining hypothetical signal sequences and models for each channel produces design samples of received signals for each antenna. Processing received-signal samples jointly with attenuation correlation function produces metric of sides used in algorithm. Side metric processor selects one of several configurations depending on whether channel is varying with time. EFFECT: reduced signal attenuation and interference. 25 cl, 8 dwg
