FIELD: petroleum processing and hydrogenation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: catalyst is prepared by impregnating alumina calcined at temperature not below 800 C with aqueous solutions of active components followed by drying and calcination provided that (i) carrier is alumina consisting of 2-5 wt % alpha-, 73-85 wt % delta-, and 25-10 wt % gamma-aluminum oxide in the form of geometric bodies 8-20 mm in size and with volume-to-surface area ratio 1.0-2.5 cu.mm/sq/mm, and (ii) drying of impregnated carrier within temperature range of 40 to 120 C is conducted with temperature rise velocity 10-15 C/hr. Resultant catalyst is used together with conventional alumino-nickel or alumino-cobalt-molybdenum hydrofining catalysts laid in layered order. EFFECT: significantly increased catalytic activity and prolonged turnaround time of catalytic systems in hydrodesulfurization of heavy oil stock containing unsaturated compounds and suspended particles. 2 tbl
