FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: 1,3-alkanediols and 3- hydroxyaldehydes are prepared by hydroformylation of oxirane with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in presence of one or more VII group metal-based hydroformylation catalysts that can contain up to 50 mol % (on conversion to metal) of phosphine-modified catalyst, in which concentration of oxirane in the beginning of reaction is below 15% based on total weight of liquid reaction mixture.
