FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of 1,3-propanediol by hydroformylation of ethylene oxide via intermediate 3-hydroxypropanal solution, from which residual carbon dioxide and insoluble catalytic cobalt or rhodium compounds are removed. Process comprises following stages: (i) bringing 3- hydroxypropanal solution into contact with oxygen under acidic conditions at temperature between about 5 and about 45 C to give oxidation products mixture containing 3- hydroxypropanal solution, one or several water-soluble cobalt or rhodium compounds, and carbon monoxide as by-product; (ii) removing carbon monoxide from oxidation products mixture; and (iii) removing water-soluble metal compounds by bringing them into contact with ion-exchange resin at temperature below 45 C. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of removing catalytic amounts of cobalt and rhodium from hydroformylation reaction products. 7 cl, 5 tbl, 10 ex
