FIELD: petrochemical processes. SUBSTANCE: butyl benzyl phthalate is prepared by interaction of sodium monobutyl phthalate with benzyl chloride in presence of triethylamine and alkali reagent (sodium bicarbonate) as catalyst, weight ratio sodium monobutyl phthalate/ benzyl chloride/sodium bicarbonate being equal to 1:(1-1.2):(0.25-0.3). Process is carried out at 90-95 C for 3 h. Invention enables: process to be simplified because of maintaining specified (constant) pH value determined by sodium bicarbonate utilized; required pH value of medium to be established spontaneously immediately after addition of sodium bicarbonate.
