FIELD: petrochemistry. SUBSTANCE: alkenes or alkene-containing mixtures are subjected to liquid phase contacting with sulfoionite catalyst in H+ from at elevated temperature followed by distillation of at least unreacted C3-C4 hydrocarbons and optionally the resulting alcohol(s). Water content in sulfocationite catalyst is maintained from 2 to 35% by weight of dry catalyst. Water is fed in molar ratio to hydrocarbons from 0.002 to 0.03:1, preferably from 0.01: 1 to 0.1:1.
