FIELD: abrasive materials. SUBSTANCE: zirconium electrocorundum contains aluminum and zirconium oxides. The latter consists of high-temperature tetragonal modification and low- temperature monoclinic modification at ratios from 20:50 to 50:80. Electrocorundum is prepared from aluminum and zirconium oxides' blend which is melted under blend layer in presence of aluminum reducing agent added under surface of melt through blend layer during the second melting half-time. Melt is tapped, crystallized, and cooled under limited contact with oxygen. Electrocorundum is destined for manufacturing abrasive wheels. Crystallizer contains metal reservoir, plate holder for mounting row of parallel plates disposed in spaced relation to each other. Each plate has V-shaped cut in its top part and all such cuts form longitudinal gutter for pouring in melt. Reservoir is provided with water cooling system. EFFECT: stabilized physical structure on cooling, increased strength of grain and working characteristics of abrasive tools, reduced laboriousness and loss of material during crystallization, and prolonged Crystallizer lifetime. 4 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
