FIELD: paper-and- pulp industry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to process for production of water-soluble cellulose derivatives and may be used for preparing product applicable as reagent stabilizing ordinary and mineralized drilling fluids and oil- and gas-well cements. Process consists in treatment of alkaline cellulose containing 27-35% cellulose, 1013% sodium hydroxide, and 55-60% water with monochloroacetic acid or its sodium salt in quantity 0.05 to 0.4 wt parts per 1 wt part of alkaline cellulose and subsequent hydroxyethylation of treated alkaline cellulose by injecting into reaction masse recycling ethylene oxide (65-70 vol %)-nitrogen (35- 30 vol %) gas mixture with moisture content on coming into contact with reaction mass 30 to 130 g/cu.m at temperature 90 to 100 C until complete conversion of ethylene oxide. Product is soluble in water to at least 98.5% and is characterized by water yield of solution 3.6-4.5 cu.cm on addition of 1% of product. EFFECT: enhanced process efficiency. 1 dwg, 4 ex
