FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of a low-viscosity sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, which is used as an agent for stabilising drilling mud in oil and gas extraction. Crushed cellulose is treated in a reactor with NaOH solution in the presence of a reaction mixture of arabinogalactan. The obtained alkaline cellulose is treated with monochloroacetic acid, a sodium salt thereof or a mixture thereof, to obtain carboxymethyl cellulose, which is unloaded, dried and crushed.

EFFECT: method simplifies the process of producing carboxymethyl cellulose, reduces alkali consumption and enables to control the degree of substitution and viscosity without changing process conditions.
