FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to slag-forming mixtures in the form of briquettes for refining steel to remove sulfur, oxygen, and nonmetal inclusions. First, outer shell in the form of cylindrical or conical barrel is molded from aluminum or aluminum alloy. Silicocalcium in amount corresponding to 20-80% of the weight of briquette is then placed inside the barrel and flooded continuously with the melt of aluminum or its alloy crystallizing on SiCa surface thereby forming double aluminum or aluminum alloy shell. Flooding is continued until briquette is finally formed if temperature of melt does not exceed melting temperature of SiCa more than by 80 C. If temperature of melt exceeds this value by 80 to 200 C, barrel is flooded layerwise. Thickness of each layer in this case reaches 1/5 to 1/3 barrel height. When forming each layer, cuttings of the same melt material are spread over the bottom and SiCa surface to form 3-8-mm layer. EFFECT: increased refining capability of briquette and utilized low-grade aluminum production waste. 4 cl
