FIELD: agriculture. SUBSTANCE: method involves designing border strip irrigation systems and choosing adequate irrigation process by using empirical formula for determining strip length. Formula defines relationship between basic parts of irrigation processes: length and width of strip, irrigation time and rate: L=k. √i i (Q/B) 2/3T2/3, where: L is strip length, m; T is irrigation time, s; i is strip average slope; Q is irrigation rate, cu. m/s per 1 m width B of strip; k is coefficient depending on crop and equal to: 665.143 for corn; 611.932 for wheat; 542.114 for oat; 438.994 for perennial grasses. Method further involves using formula for determining other parts of irrigation process satisfying design and technical requirements. Method provides uniform wetting of border strip along the whole length of it without occurrence of water erosion and reduced consumption of irrigation water due to preventing excessive water from being discharged at strip end. Method may be used for designing of irrigation systems employed in regions having different relief, soil amelioration and climatic conditions.
