FIELD: recovery of stainless steel scrap contaminated with radionuclides (uranium, thorium). SUBSTANCE: method involves smelting of metal wastes, primarily stainless steel scrap, using flux composed of fluoride and calcium oxide in following proportion, mass percent: (20-80); (80-20). Melt is mixed up with air or inert gas, cooled down until phases are separated, and then separately poured out. Upon pouring radioactivity level of metal becomes tolerable for further use. It is good practice to use slag produced upon calcium-heat recovery of uranium tetrafluoride as flux. Slag obtained upon pouring decontaminated metal may be recovered involving extraction of radionuclides. EFFECT: enlarged functional capabilities. 1 tbl
