FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: associative memory uses Lampel-Zeev-Whelch procedure for executing data compression. Data compression device has appropriate memory locations with prefix code field and character field. Register content including code field and character field is associatively compared with content of memory locations to detect coincidence between them, if any. If coincidence is detected, coincidence address is entered in register code field and next input character is entered in its character field. This process goes on until non- coincidence is recorded. Code contained in register code field is transmitted as compressed code of sequence and register content is recorded in next vacant memory location. Next cycle is initiated by clearing register code field and stages described are resumed. EFFECT: facilitated control of data compression. 20 cl, 2 dwg
