FIELD: power engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed invention can be used in internal combustion engines with optimum cycles designed for mobile and stationary applications. Method includes conversion of thermochemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy in limited changeable volume by means of repeated processes of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. Expansion and/or compression take place in asymmetrical working volume changing according to power dependence V = a+b(x+c)m where V is working volume; x is argument; a, b, c are real number; m is exponent of power chosen from inequality 0 < m < 1,1 < m < 2. Expansion and/or compression are carried out in asymmetrical working volume relative to half of stroke of working member until ratio 2:1 is set. EFFECT: increased efficiency, reduced noise level, simplified design. 2 cl, 2 dwg
