FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of inhibiting formation of clatrate hydrates in flowing medium comprising hydrate-forming compounds. Method comprises treating flowing medium with water-soluble polymer or copolymer comprising N-vinylamide unit of formula I: as inhibitor wherein R₁ is hydrogen or hydrocarbon group having from one to six carbon atoms; R₂ is hydrocarbon group having from one to six carbon atoms, and total sum of hydrocarbon atoms of R₁ and R₂ is more or equal to 1, but less than 8 and x is average number of units which are essential for attaining molecular weight of polymer between about 1000 and about 6,000,000. Method is applicable in treating stream of flowing medium e. g. natural gas being transported in pipeline for inhibiting formation of hydrate locks in pipeline.
