FIELD: determination of characteristics of rails, possibly rail grinding processes. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of registering readings of pickups for measuring lengthwise and crosswise profiles of rail head and determining fluctuations of those reading values from basic ones; realizing measurements in the same common points of railway track passed successively; according to received data drawing profile curves of rolling surface of rail head with use of mathematical expression relating with pickup readings. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy of parameter determination with use of less number of pickups, possibility for direct measurement in real time. 1 cl, 2 dwg
