FIELD: chemical treatment of metals, more particularly pickling of surface of thermally treated carbon steel to remove scale and protect surface in metallurgical, machine building and other industries. SUBSTANCE: solution substantially comprises, wt %: ferric (III) chloride, 10-30; hydrochloric acid, 1-7; and phosphate-containing component, 0.01-1.0, and water, the balance, when desired, solution contains ferric (II) chloride. After being pickled, metal surface has no hydrogen embrittlement and other over etched areas and is protected with phosphate film that does prevent one from carrying out further technological operations on metal. EFFECT: more efficient method of treating carbon steels. 2 cl, 1 ex, 1 tbl
