METHOD OF PRODUCTION OF MAGNESIUM AND CHLORINE AND PRODUCTION FLOW LINE FOR REALIZATION OF THIS METHOD Russian patent published in 2001 - IPC

Abstract RU 2168563 C2

FIELD: methods of production of magnesium and chlorine. SUBSTANCE: method consists in using solid highly dehydrated carnallite as raw material at content of magnesium oxide and water not exceeding 0.3%, each obtained in fluidized bed furnace; chlorine is fed to fire-boxes of this furnace from electrolyzers of production flow line; transportation of chlorine excludes its humidification. Provision is made for loading raw materials in passages connecting the flow line electrolyzers. Sodium chloride and/or solid used electrolyte from electrolyzers is used as salts loaded into electrolyzers together with chlorine-and-magnesium raw material. Content of MgCl2 is maintained between 7 and 11% due to change in loading raw material and/or chlorides of alkalin and alkali-earth metals; content of MgCl2 in electrolyzers located after separating unit in way of motion of melt is increased from minimum to maximum and content of MgCl2 in electrolyzers located before separating unit is reduced from maximum to minimum. Production flow line proposed for realization of this method includes conveyers for delivery of raw material and/or chlorides of alkali and alkali and alkali-earth metals, bin and proportioning unit for metering loaded materials and unit for removal of used electrolyte. In case of return of used electrolyte to flow line, cooling and grinding unit is provided together with units for delivery of electrolyte to electrolyzers or conveyers for raw materials. It is good practice to arrange separating unit before one of two electrolyzers in order to reduce leakage of current through transportation channels; electrolyzers are connected with DC bus ducts. EFFECT: reduced labor consumption; low cost; reduced power requirements. 12 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl, 1 ex
