FIELD: operation of power plants. SUBSTANCE: operation of internal combustion engine at idling is effected by alternating run-out and acceleration strokes at automatic action of control member by fuel delivery at change of rotational speed on crankshaft from high to low limits and complete disconnection of fuel delivery at run-out strokes. Upper limit is minimum stable rotational speed of crankshaft at the beginning of run-out stroke (at the end of acceleration stroke); low limit is minimum starting rotational speed at the beginning of acceleration stroke (at the end of run-out stroke). Switching on/off the mode, as well as limiting the cyclic delivery of fuel during acceleration stroke at level ensuring efficient operation of engine is performed automatically by signal received from position sensor. Description of device proposed for realization of this method is also given. EFFECT: reduced consumption of fuel; reduced resinification of fuel and wear of parts. 3 cl, 2 dwg
