FIELD: communication systems; adaptive filters. SUBSTANCE: proposed method and device are used for automatic adjustment of self-adjusting unit of adaptive-filter using least-mean-square error algorithm depending on input value of signal-to-noise ratio. Device functions to follow instant value of signal-to-noise ratio and to continuously adjust size of unit using unit size selecting member with aid of adaptation control member so as to obtain high noise immunity due to increasing convergence speed of filter and reducing asymptotic mean-square error. Best alternative for implementing proposed algorithm is represented by acoustic-echo compensator; according to invention adaptive filter is useful for any device where noise characteristics are subject to changes.
