FIELD: chemical and other industries. SUBSTANCE: method consists in absorption of hot gas mixture obtained due to oxidation of ammonia and containing water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen oxides in aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide accomplished in vertical cylindrical apparatus filled with sodium; gas and starting solution of sodium hydroxide are fed to lower section of absorption zone and are discharged from upper section of said zone. Process is conducted multi-sectional absorption apparatus whose interior is divided into upper and lower compartments by partition provided with bubbler and housing of said apparatus is provided with pipe unions for delivery of circulating solution, discharge of production solution and exhaust gases; upper compartment is divided into sections by means of screened plates; at least two separating plates are fitted at height of 2/3 of upper compartment; said plates are provided with overflow branch pipes; one plate is communicated with lower compartment of apparatus; other plate is communicated with lower portion of upper compartment; bubbler is made in the form of cylinder whose upper butt end is provided with perforated partition. EFFECT: increased yield of product due to increased sodium nitride to sodium nitrate ratio; improved quality of product due to possibility of producing sodium nitrite with no admixture of sodium nitrate at low content of sodium hydroxide. 4 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl, 1 ex
