FIELD: oil and gas production. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions and methods for increasing oil recovery of permeability-nonuniform thermal formations and aims at preparing homogeneous aqueous solution containing no undissolved polymer gel particles and at simplifying and accelerating dissolution of polymer in cold water. Composition contains, %: methylcellulose, 0.5-1.0; urea, 2.0-20.0; polar organic solvent for methylcellulose, 2.0-10.0; and fresh or mineralized water, up to 212 g/l of salts. Preparation of composition involves preparing urea solution in cold water having specified concentration, adding specified amount of polar organic solvent, and adding specified amount of methylcellulose.
