FIELD: oil and gas production. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to gelating compositions based on polyacrylamide and cross-linking agent increasing oil recovery of strata, restricting water inflow in production wells, controlling coverage of formation and profile of intake capacity of well, selectively insulating and controlling reagent streams in thermal processes of oil production. Selection of such compositions includes determining gelation time of system as function of molecular weight variation and degree of polyacrylamide hydrolysis, concentrations of polyacrylamide and cross-linking agent, and, in addition, apparent gelation rate constant using design equation. Gelation time is found as function of variations in gelation temperature, water-salt composition of solvent, hydrogen index of medium, and intensity of hydrodynamic fields' action by way of performing alternative computations of kinetic parameters utilizing reduced mathematical model.
