FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of synthesis of benzyl alcohol by hydrolysis of benzyl chloride with water at increased temperature. Benzyl alcohol is synthesized by hydrolysis of benzyl chloride at 80-180 C. Benzyl chloride and water taken in molar ratio = 1:(10-70) are fed into reactor fitted by dispersing devices. Reaction is terminated at conversion value 30-90%. Product of reaction after its removal from reactor is separated for an aqueous and organic phase. An aqueous phase containing diluted hydrochloric acid is extracted with solvent to absorb organic components dissolved in diluted hydrochloric acid, in part, benzyl alcohol. Organic phase is separated for benzyl chloride that is recovered into reactor and crude benzyl alcohol. The latter is refined to obtain highly pure benzyl alcohol. Method excludes the use of sodium carbonate and prevents sodium chloride formation. EFFECT: improved method of synthesis, simplified technology of synthesis of benzyl alcohol. 3 dwg, 1 ex
