FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to water-containing tolylenediamine useful for storage and transporting as liquid and presenting mixture of tolylenediamine and water in the weight ratio 100 : (1-40) with maximal solidifying point 95 C but preferably from 60 to 90 C and desirably from 65 to 70 C. Water-containing tolylenediamine comprises mainly 2,4- and/or 2,6-tolylenediamine and, possibly, 2,3- and 3,4- isomers in the amount from 0.05 to 5 weight % and it comprises high-molecular byside substances in the amount from 0.01 to 2.5 weight % depending on conditions of synthesis. As a rule, ratio of tolylenediamine and water is in the weight ratio = 100 : (2-10). Method for preparing water-containing tolylenediamine useful for storage or transporting as liquid involves interaction of toluene with nitric acid, catalytic hydrogenation of dinitrotoluene formed, separation of catalyst used, distillation off of reaction water up to water content from 1 to 40% of weight of tolylene- diamine but preferably from 2 to 10 weight % followed by separation of watercontaining tolylenediamine as the end substance with maximal solidifying point 95 C. Method is realized in the presence of inert organic solvent or diluting agent. Method of synthesis of tolylene diisocyanate is realized by phosgenation of tolylenediamine obtained from mixture of tolylenediamine and water from where water is removed by vacuum distillation off before phosgene feeding.
