METHOD FOR PROTECTING TERRITORY FROM FLOODING Russian patent published in 2001 - IPC

FIELD: hydraulic engineering; erection of check dams of local grounds. SUBSTANCE: method involves survey of location, base preparation, excavation of trenches, placing screen sections with stopes of each next tier displaced relative to previous one lower strips being overlapped by upper ones. Screen is made of conveyer belt strips by vertically placing screen sections through their wide side on packing layers made of high- porous material for example mineral-fiber slabs or strips of geotextiles placed in advance. Screen is placed with its long side along axis of check dam. Vertical packing layers made of same material are placed at mating points of screen section through degree of overlapping and through depth of trenches. Vertical packing layers are adjacent to horizontal packing layers at mating points of adjoining screen sections through height and at right angle in profile. Screen sections of overlying tiers are displaced relative to screen sections of underlying tier through width of vertical packing layers towards downstream side. Check dam may be erected with screen in two vertical planes spaced apart through distance equal for example to width of dam crest. Height of screen of upstream side is greater than that of downstream side for example by two times. Trench base for screen is arranged lower than flood lever marks for example by 1.0 m. Check dams are equipped with device of transversal filtering toes; distance between mentioned toes may be up to 1500 m.
