FIELD: manufacture of glass from metal melt and other industries. SUBSTANCE: method comprises high- temperature conversion of hydrocarbons, low-temperature steam conversion of carbon monoxide and subsequent purification of gas mixture from carbon dioxide and water vapors. High-temperature conversion of hydrocarbons is carried out in three layers of granular refractory material in the form of grains having fractions of 10-25 mm, 20-35 mm, 40-90 mm in amounts of 20-40%, 40-50 and 20-30% respectively, material of coarser fraction, in addition to lower layer of combustion chamber being disposed in upper layer of refractory material, and low- temperature of carbon monoxide is carried out in layer of granular zinc-chromium copper catalyst at height to radius ratio of 1.1-1.6. EFFECT: improved quality of protective atmosphere. 2 cl, 1 ex
