FIELD: fire-fighting equipment used in environment protection and in petroleum industry. SUBSTANCE: method involves providing burning of combustible liquid sample in related apparatus and simultaneously supplying cooling liquid in continuous mode; prior to supplying cooling liquid, determining thermal parameters of real litter model surface; calculating cooling liquid rate on the basis of thermal parameter data; determining combustion mass speed. Method allows burning processes occurring upon spilling of petroleum and petroleum products on different types of litter surfaces to be investigated and resultant data to be used for eliminating accident consequences and for providing fire and explosion safe technologies. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and improved reproducibility of real processes during modeling thereof under laboratory conditions. 1 dwg
