FIELD: radio communication systems. SUBSTANCE: comfort noise functions trace background noise picked up by microphone in radio communication systems. These functions present comfort noise information produced by alternative-data signal generator which is transmitted by distant units during silent periods to enable equipment on receiving end to put out adequate background noise by means of facilities and to generate background frames while transmitting-end equipment could stop invoking transmitting line so as to save power supply. Muting functions are supported by continuing supply of signals to comfort noise functions so as to ensure continuous tracing of background noise. Enabling muting mode at distant unit makes transmitter receive comfort noise frames or silence frame instead of information taken out of voice (speech) coder. EFFECT: provision for muting transmission while saving ability of precise measurement and reproduction of background noise during silent periods. 19 cl, 5 dwg
