FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions composed of petroleum product and colorless thymol-phthaleine marker. The latter is added to marking solution or composition having been preliminarily dissolved in nonaqueous solvent to form solution capable of being dissolved in marked petroleum product. Nonaqueous solvent is preferably selected from aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic alcohols, and aprotic solvents and contains approximately 5-50% (especially 15-25%) of marker and approximately 50-95% (especially 75-85%) of solvent. Invention enables creation of marking solutions, which are invisible in petroleum-based liquid products in effective concentration but acquire distinguishing blue color when "developed" in marked product by the aid of corresponding developing reagent.
