FIELD: study of strength properties of solid materials by determination of parameters of cracks formed in material under its loading. SUBSTANCE: method testing specimens of solid materials, predominantly metals, to determine effect of cracks on mechanical properties of material lies in manufacture of specimen or series of specimens, in cutting of stress concentrator in specimens, for instance, in the form of nick, in application to tested specimen of load varying in time in specified time interval to form crack in the zone of nick enlarged in comparison with initial value of nick, in analysis of effect of depth of crack in tested specimen on its mechanical characteristics. Tested specimen comes in the form of specimen prepared for torsion test that includes welded or soldered joint comprised of two parts made separately. Load applied to tested specimen is load of torque. After determination of load under which cracks are formed and determination of load under which similar specimen fails tested specimen is subjected to test with intermediate load with subsequent detection of load resulting in emergence of cracks by method of successive approximation. Fixed image of origin and growth of cracks is obtained with the aid of optical metallography on photographs.
