FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention can be used as power plant, namely, as engine with external supply of heat, or in form of refrigerating machine of heat pump if plant operates in reversible thermodynamic cycle. Proposed engine has pairs of coaxially arranged hot and cold cylinders, pistons installed in cylinders to form two working spaces, namely piston and rod ones, gas main lines connecting like spaces of hot and cold cylinders and including cold, hot and recuperative (or regenerative) heat exchangers and drive mechanism coupled with each piston through rod, at least one pair of coaxially arranged hot and cold cylinders. Rod of hot piston and rod of cold piston are independently coupled with drive mechanism. Kinematics of drive mechanism provides possibility of simultaneously moving the pistons away when pistons are in upper part of cylinders and subsequent moving them towards each other when pistons are in lower part of cylinders. EFFECT: simplified designed of double acting externally heated engine. 3 cl, 6 dwg
