FIELD: production of porous refractory materials (cellular concentrate) and manufacture of articles from them. SUBSTANCE: method consists in mixing of ground mineral mixture with gas generating agent and aqueous mixing solution with pH above 8. Process includes preliminary activation of gas generating agent in the form of crystalline silicon by milling it to obtain particles sizing less than 100 mcm. Aqueous mixing solution with pH above 8 is used in the form of water glass. Water glass to silicon weight ratio is (2-6): 1 and mineral mixture to water glass weight ratio is (1-1.5):1. In this case, gas generating agent in the form of silicon is first mixed with water glass and then with mineral mixture. Mineral mixture includes natural mineral substances: quartz sand, clay, perlite, vermiculite; and building materials: cement, portland cement, lime gypsum; industrial and building material wastes: ash, slags or their mixtures. Invention may be used in manufacture of building material such as lining bricks and plates, heat-insulating shells, heat-resistant fire-fighting members and other articles. Claimed method provides for production of refracting material with porosity of 50-68% and possessing high physico-mechanical and operating characteristics. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 2 cl, 1 tbl
