FIELD: manufacture of knitted products. SUBSTANCE: carriage drive has engine, chain running around drive sprocket and driven sprocket to form two branches between sprockets, flexible tie-rod connected to carriage and running around rotating guides mounted on ends of needle box, and sprocket mounted for rotation between chain branches. Drive has additional guide, which extends parallel with chain branches, slide mounted on additional drive, block fixed on slide and provided with sprocket spindle, with one slot between adjacent teeth of sprocket being of smaller size, and cam mounted on slide and provided with recess having middle portion inclined to longitudinal axis of additional guide at an angle of α_c and end portions inclined at an angle of α_k. Recess is adapted for receiving part of sprocket spindle. Two stops with flexible members are positioned on additional guide. Guiding chains are positioned on slide. Flexible tie-rod is coupled to slide. Angle α_c is selected on the condition that self-braking be excluded and angle α_k is selected on the condition that self-braking be provided. Slide has body mounted on additional guide and cover connected to body for forming channels for receiving chain branches. Flexible members of stops are adapted for accumulating sufficient amounts of energy. Guiding chains are equipped with flexible members made in the form of leaf springs. Slide has slot for insertion of block. Parts are made and positioned so that sprocket is disengaged from one of chain branches, when other branch comes into contact with slot of smaller size.
