FIELD: ferrous metallurgy, possibly manufacture of steel ingots. SUBSTANCE: ingot is cast in ingot mold widened downward. Thickness of walls of ingot mold in each cross section along its height consists 0.4 - 0.55 of radius of inner cavity of ingot mold. Ingot mold is filled with metal from bottom at predetermined speed. At time moment of filling ingot mold with metal, continuous measurement of temperature of surface of ingot mold is realized until achieving maximum temperature of its surface. Then ingot is extracted. Again ingot mold is filled with metal and its surface temperature is measured at changing rate of filling ingot mold. Above mentioned operations are repeated until achieving symmetrical distribution of temperature along surface of ingot mold relative to half of ingot mold height. Set mode of filling rate provides horizontal crystallization of metal. EFFECT: minimum liquation in cross section of ingot, minimum non-uniformity of metal along ingot height. 2 cl, 1 dwg, 1 ex _
