FIELD: inorganic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of magnesium oxide used in production of refractory materials, in electrochemical and paper and pulp industry, in building. Method of production of magnesium oxide involves treatment of natural dolomite with sulfuric acid or a mixture of sulfuric and hydrochloric acids taken in the molar ratio = 1:2. After separation of magnesium salts solution from precipitate magnesium hydroxide is precipitated from solution with alkaline reagent providing pH 10.6-12. Then precipitated sediment is separated and thermal treatment is carried out at temperature 760-1200 C to obtain refractory magnesium oxide. Invention excludes stage of dolomite roasting, separates magnesium compounds from calcium compounds and allows to utilize acid waste.
