FIELD: nuclear power engineering. SUBSTANCE: damping device designed for installation at nuclear power plant in cooling-pond container compartment to prevent probable accidents caused by heavy pieces falling from high altitudes (15 m) such as container holding spent fuel assemblies of power reactor and for protecting building structures of powerhouse and container from destruction has slab and energy absorbing device placed under this slab on pond bottom and made in the form of minimum three modules mounted one on top of other inside supporting structure provided with horizontal spacer slabs; modules are made in the form of sectors and shells with space in-between filled with balls and empty spaces; wall thickness of module shells and horizontal slabs increases with approach to pond bottom; inner surfaces of shells and bottom surfaces of horizontal slabs are provided with releasing notches. In emergency situations device provides for gradual reduction of shock loads and their uniform distribution among building structures and container to ensure their integrity.
