FIELD: optics. SUBSTANCE: element of liquid-crystal display includes layer of liquid crystal located between two substrates with transparent electrodes. One electrode comes in the form of two combs with mutually penetrating teeth. Period of each comb is 2d, common period of both combs equals d. Second electrode is manufactured in the form of stripes with period 3/2d. Input mask with slits is mounted across input of element and output mask is located at its outlet. Slits in masks are positioned with matching. Phased diffraction gratings are formed with supply of controlling voltages to one comb, to two combs or to half of stripes of second electrode. White light passing through these gratings is diffracted and depending on period one of three colors passes through slits of output mask. EFFECT: generation of third color in element. 1 cl, 2 dwg
