FIELD: paper-and-pulp industry. SUBSTANCE: modified cellulose for manufacturing paper textile fibers, plastics, and similar materials is prepared in the process involving activation of cellulose, partial removal of activating agent to its residual content below 10%, introducing thus prepared cellulose into reaction with substituting organic compound, and removing the rests of activating agent and substitution reaction by-products. Resulting product is characterized by degree of substitution of hydroxyl groups with organic groups below 0.2 and degree of crystallinity below 10%. Invention allows degree of destruction of crystalline regions of cellulose to be increased, which gives rise to full or partial substitution with uniform distribution of hydroxyl groups facilitating cellulose derivative formation. EFFECT: enhanced process efficiency, reduced expenses, and eliminated need of intermediate washing step. 20 cl, 4 dwg, 3 tbl, 23 ex
