FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to producing light distillate fractions by thermal destruction of heavy oils, petroleum products, and petroleum residues. Process includes thermal cracking of heavy feedstock and consecutive 3-4-step lowering of temperature of heavy feedstock in contact with oil-inert gas. Petroleum product is subjected to radiation surface heating across all the surface at radiator temperature above 500 C and radiation density more than 20 kW/sq.m. Apparatus comprises feedstock and residue tanks, tubular feedstock furnace, pumps, reactors, and inert gas heating furnace. Reactor incorporates radiation screen with its surface in parallel to petroleum product surface. Screen is heated by flameless gas burners and distance from screen surface to liquid surface varies from 30 to 300 mm.
