FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: bis(4-hydroxyaryl)alkanes are prepared by condensation of aromatic hydroxy compounds with ketones, in particular production of bisphenol A from phenol and acetone. Process is carried out in gas-liquid mode in countercurrent column-type rectification reactor providing continuous removal of forming water. Process is preferably catalyzed by cation-exchange resin in H form. Temperature and content of ketones and water in liquid reaction mixture are controlled by varying gas phase composition. In this case, water is transferred into gas phase and ketone from liquid phase into gas phase according to thermodynamic equilibrium. Temperature in reactor is superior to crystallization temperature of reaction mixture. EFFECT: increased selectivity of process and yield of desired product. 13 cl, 10 ex
