FIELD: hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: invention provides hydrogenation catalyst suitable for treatment of low-grade terephthalic acid to remove 4-carboxybenzaldehyde, said catalyst being palladium metal deposited on activated carbon wherein less than 50% of palladium is incorporated into surface layer to the depth up to 50 mcm, whereas the rest of palladium is incorporated in the layer at a depth between 50 and 400 mcm. Catalyst is prepared by impregnating activated carbon with palladium salt aqueous solution, volume of impregnation solution being equal to or less than activated carbon pore volume.
