FIELD: industrial inorganic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of ammonia via ammonia synthesis gas catalytic conversion. Process comprises following operations: (i) contact of ammonia synthesis gas with ammonia synthesis catalyst in reaction zone disposed in one or more catalytic tubes; (ii) cooling reaction zone to assure implementation of the process under isothermal conditions by means of circulating cooling agent inside cooling pipes concentrically surrounding catalytic tube, said cooling agent being selected from salts, salt-metal mixture with melting point below reaction zone temperature; and (iii) discharging ammonia-enriched stream flowing out of reaction zone. Converter has at least one catalytic tube adapted to receive ammonia synthesis gas and to retain reaction zone for ammonia synthesis catalyst and at least one cooling pipe concentrically surrounding at least one catalytic tube containing above indicated cooling agent.
