FIELD: radiological engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves primarily irradiating an article under examination, identifying products detected in found areas, determining sizes and position of an unidentified product, determining supposed mass of the explosive substance under test matching in size the unidentified product sizes from the unidentified product sizes and mean density of known explosive substances. The area is then irradiated with thermal neutrons having variable directional radiation pattern on the basis of deuterium-deuterium reaction, having neutron retarder. Two types of gamma-quanta are recorded and calculations are done and decisions are taken on explosive content in the article under control. EFFECT: reduced irradiation action; increased sensitivity of measurements; improved article image quality. 10 cl, 11 dwg
