FIELD: material analysis; radiological inspection. SUBSTANCE: thermal neutron emitters are units with surface emitting neutrons directed towards gamma radiation detection units which number is equal to the number of emitters. The value of this number is dependent on the ratio of the maximum cross-section area of one of the sections containing the things under examination mounted on cargo bearing unit of transportation means to the area of the emitter unit surface emitting neutrons. Each radiation detection unit and the corresponding emitter unit are mounted coaxially and directed in perpendicular to the maximum area cross-section of the section containing things under examination and disposed on different sides of the section. Radiation detection units and emitter units are pairwise distributed in longitudinal and transverse directions of the cargo bearing unit of the transportation means to cover the whole maximum section area by scanning sequentially this cross-section with detection units when the cargo bearing unit of the transportation means moves.
