FIELD: electrical engineering. SUBSTANCE: procedure locating point of fault in cable includes supply of testing amplitude-modulated signal, movement of detector along cable, recording of signals, conversion of extracted signals to signals with same frequency and establishment of phase shift which value is employed to make decision on point of fault in cable. Amplitude-modulated signal is sent between sheath of cable and ground. Signals with upper f1 and lower f2 side frequencies are isolated, then these signals are converted to signals of same frequency in agreement with condition mf1 = nf2 = const, where m and n are integral numbers.
