FIELD: underwater acoustic measurements, underwater acoustic navigation systems which determine propagation time of underwater acoustic signal between objects separated by aqueous medium. SUBSTANCE: invention consists in transmission of acoustic signal A from first to second object, in reception of signal A at second object, in transmission of acoustic signal Б from second object to first object, in reception of acoustic signal Б at first object, in measurement of time moment ti of sending of signal A from first object, in use of sequences of numbered code combinations in the capacity of acoustic signals A and Б. Each code combination comprises code elements which are acoustic equivalents of information quanta with clock period T. Accuracy in determination of propagation time of acoustic signal between objects is ensured thanks to increased precision of evaluation of boundaries of periods T of arrival of code elements of signal A and signal Б at second and first objects correspondingly.
