FIELD: automatic control of technological processes; production of chlorine and caustic soda by mercury method in electrolyzers with solid anodes and liquid cathodes. SUBSTANCE: mercury electrolyzers are provided with mechanisms for hoisting and lowering groups of anodes by change of inter-electrode distance between anodes and cathodes. Equivalent resistance of electrolyte is used as adjustable magnitude calculated by voltage and current measured at each anode group. Preset magnitude of minimum permissible equivalent resistance is calculated by actual preset magnitude of current load through said anode groups of each electrolyzer at correction of temperature and concentration of sodium chloride in brine fed to electrolyzer at smooth distribution of current by anode groups. EFFECT: increased anode path due to avoidance of overloads in different anode lines and short-circuits in electrolyzer. 1 dwg, 1 ex
