FIELD: water treatment. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to sulfonation of brown coals to produce sulfonated coal, which can be used for chemical treatment of water. For that, brown coal fraction 0.25-1.25 mm with moisture content no higher than 10% is treated with oleum, after which neutralized, washed, and dried. Oleum treatment is conducted for 1 h at 50-100 C at oleum-to-coal weight ratio (3- 3.5):1. EFFECT: increased exchange capacity of coal to 300 mg-mole/l.
